Is the Sony α7S the answer to my restaurant review photography dreams?

My new Sony α7S is a big investment for a restaurant review camera.

Last night I shot some photographs of food at the Black Fire Restaurant in Braddon. As I describe in the food blog post the lighting was pretty good. It wasn’t dark and it wasn’t too bright.

All of these photographs have been processed in Adobe Lightroom. I applied the Camera Standard preset, enabled lens correction, used the mask tool to sharpen and added some luminosity noise reduction before having some fun in the basic panel. In the basic panel I adjusted exposure, clarity and contrast mainly.

If you browse through Yummy Lummy you’ll come across many restaurant reviews with photographs shot with my trusty Canon PowerShot G16. I love that little point and shoot but in low light at high ISO it struggled. When I heard about the Sony α7S and it’s full frame sensor and pixel design for low light I knew I had to get it. As a mirrorless it would be smaller than even my Nikon D5300 dSLR and so the form factor was a big deal to me. The Sony α7S is bigger than my Canon PowerShot G16 so it does attract some attention but I believe it’s worth it.

The next challenge will be shooting in a poorly lit restaurant. I’ll keep you posted.
