The Belconnen Town Council has been keen to get feedback from residents on how we can best use what we have in Belconnen. I’m keen to see more activity on Lake Ginninderra, like sailing, jet ski racing, remote control boating, fishing, kayaking and canoeing.
I’ve been told that more activity on the water will help keep cyanobacterial blooms in control and reduce the health risks associated with stagnant carp infected water. I know that perch and other recreational fish have been released into Lake Ginninderra but I’ve only ever seen people catch carp. If I caught a perch in the lake I’m not sure I’d want to eat it. I worry about human made waterways that seem so stagnant. An alternative would be to have an area and develop a beach and build a swimming area like South Bank on the Brisbane River. That is a terrific area and so well patronised. A fabulous example of using the natural beauty of a waterway and keeping it relatively safe for human recreation. I readily accept the cold weather of Canberra may be a disincentive, but if the water was heated, I’d swim in it. Now we just need a clean power supply for this venture
I shot this photograph on a Sunday afternoon as a heap of boats were out sailing.
