Food photography with a kit lens

I love my Tamron 90 mm f/2.8 MACRO lens for food photography on my Nikon D7100. The effective focal length is around 135 mm accounting for the crop factor. I wanted to experiment with a kit lens to see if I could get similar results.

These images are from today (breakfast and dinner). You can get more information about the food at Yummy Lummy. The lens I used is a Nikon 55–200 mm f/4.0–5.6 kit lens.

Pay day dinner. Leftover vegetables baked with bacon and blue cheese. NIKON D7100 with 55.0-200.0 mm f/4.0-5.6 at 110mm and f/22, 1/20sec, ISO 400

What do you think?

I had the camera and lens setup on a tripod and oriented in portrait. The light from the left is from a softbox and from the right it’s a SB-800 speedlight. This is my standard food photography setup.
