It’s a beautiful Saturday morning in Canberra and it’s the second weekend of Floriade. It’s a lovely morning for a walk from the Questacon car park to Floriade.

When I arrived I was surprised that the bulbs didn’t look as striking as they usually do. The recent cold damp August weather may have influenced the bulb flowering.
The usual stalls and stuff were there as well as the rides for the kids. I was surprised the gnomes didn’t appear as plentiful as in previous years. Maybe schools are not as engaged as before. I don’t know. I always like to look at the gnomes.
I like Floriade. The flowers are always beautiful and Floriade attracts so many people, especially photographers. I saw so many cameras and tripods while I was there. There were some amazing high end DSLRs on show, especially Canon bodies with red ringed L glass. There were also about the same proportion of Nikon shooters and a good smattering of mirrorless enthusiasts, mostly Lumix and Sony from what I could see. I noticed one lady with a nice Nikon 800e on a tripod, a GPS unit mounted and she was shooting long exposures I assume through a neutral density filter. Floriade was replete with smartphone shooters and I got asked by a bloke to capture the moment of him and his elderly Mum in front of the main bed of flowers.
I had my Nikon D810 with the Nikkor 24–70 mm lens plus a circular polarising filter. I need to use it more and shoot a lot more photographs with it in different settings to really understand the effect it has on image quality. All these photographs have been processed in Adobe Lightroom. In each of them I selected the camera standard or camera landscape setting. I enabled the lens correction and in the basic panel I played with exposure, shadows and clarity. For some of the photographs where there were harsh shadows I used the brush tool and the gradient tool to bring out shadows or reduce exposure and highlights. Many of the single bulb shots have been cropped to draw your eye into a rule of thirds intersection.
